This blog is to enable SharePoint Syntex in our tenant, but lets understand first basics of Project Cortex and how SharePoint Syntex is related to it.
As of now organization's content is spread across hundreds of SharePoint sites, MS Teams, One Drive and Exchange Online etc. Which makes content accessibility very difficult though Microsoft is having advance search but accessibility of right content at right time depends on the user's searching skills.
Project Cortex is a new O365 service from Microsoft to make content management more contextual. Using MS Graph, Improved Managed Metadata Service and AI Builder capabilities Microsoft is trying to put content at the center of the O365 universe. For more detail on Project Cortex follow this blog from Seth Patton from Microsoft - Introduction to Project Cortex
SharePoint Syntex is the first product from Project Cortex. At a very high level and to start I can say, it is an AI Builder service tightly integrated with SharePoint + unstructured data processing capability.
SharePoint Syntex is basically a service for classification and extraction of data from unstructured data sources like documents and images. For more detail on SharePoint Syntex follow this document SharePoint Syntex Overview
Follow this Microsoft document to set up SharePoint Syntex. Here assign license part which I found is not updated, you can check that in this blog - Step 2 : Assign License
In addition to the Microsoft document please find below few screenshots to get better idea if you are not having a tenant to play around.
Go to Admin Center > Setup > Automate content understanding
On Automate content understanding page, I found User Impact and About content understanding section useful.
Following are the links from above two sections
Learn more about how to automatically process forms in SharePoint
Follow the instructions, give a name to your Content Center, then review and finish
Once Automate content understanding enabled, click on Manage, then go to tab Document understanding and click on Content center address to check your content center site.

Now you need to acquire a SharePoint Syntex license, please follow steps here, I clicked on Free trial and followed steps
Once license acquired you need to assign it to user
Now to test SharePoint Syntex you need to create a model and need to do required configurations and trainings then you need to apply your model to a library.
For instance I had created a sample model and applied to a document library in one of my site, and this is how it works
I will share more details on how I achieved this in another blog, as I am still exploring.
But in short I created and trained a "Document Understanding Model" and applied to this library. Once I uploaded an unstructured document it automatically extracted and populated fields here.
