Often you will create Teams and will do some initial testing. And you may end up with some test messages in your Team’s Post tab. You may want to clean that before onboarding your team members.
There are 3 types of messages you may end up with.
Messages which you post
Messages posted by your colleagues
System generated posts, like you get by MS Automate, SharePoint or from your BOT
You can delete the messages which are posted by you
you can also ask your colleagues to delete their messages. But we cannot delete posts which are generated by services like SharePoint, MS Automate and BOT.
To delete these messages, we need to create a retention policy. Following are the steps
Go to Microsoft 365 Compliance Admin Center > Policies
2. Click on Retention under Data, it will navigate to Information governance page as shown in image, I am already having a policy to delete chat history of one of my channels. We will create a new for this blog
3. Click on New Retention Policy, give it a name
4. Decide on retention and deletion setting, 1 day is the minimum setting which we can select here for content deletion
5. Choose location, this is very important step you need to follow instructions carefully, if you will do any mistake here you will lose important data. Select radio button “Let me choose specific location”, then OFF all other locations except Teams
6. Select Team channel messages, then select “Choose teams”
7. Select your Team
8. Confirm your selection
On Next screen review settings, then click on “Create this policy”
Now your policy is in place, just wait for it to get applied, it will delete messages which are older than a day, but as 1 day is the minimum setting which we can select for content deletion so you need to wait for a day to get all content cleared from you Team.
Once you cleared all your messages, then switch off your policy, from the panel as shown in image.
